Estrangement
Coaching Services
I offer a wide range of coaching programs that I hope will help you heal, grow and flourish.
Loss
Loss is a powerful emotion. Much research has been explored about loss. The loss associated with estrangement is unique because of what is called ambiguous loss where the person missed and loved is physically absent but psychologically present. This type of 'frozen grief' makes moving on difficult because of uncertainty, lack of clarity about the future and feelings of being "stuck." Though no reasonable parent would ever prefer their child to be deceased rather than estranged, when someone dies, there is a funeral and other rituals to make their absence real and final. Estrangement creates feelings that life will never be the same again. As I seek to share what I have learned from a decade of this type of loss, I hope to help you process your loss and the many complex feelings surrounding estrangement.
Empathy
Empathy is a difficult emotion to express when you are hurt or even angry about an adult child going "no contact." Empathy has many facets that are important to other aspects of the dynamics of estrangement for anyone enduring this pain. This class also explores some important aspects of objectivity to better understand how a reasonable person could accept the unique difficulties within estrangement, as part of moving forward and moving on. Empathy is emotional and yet all relationships include logical elements. This class will explore empathy against the backdrop of the most common research methods. You will be presented with the opportunity to assess the likelihood of reconnecting, building trust, forgiving, reconciling and even restoring the most important familial relationships in your life. The discipline of empathy can become a new approach to relationships. Self-discovery is the starting point of accepting what it will take to do the work to move from estrangement to engagement.

Employee
Estrangement is profoundly distracting, even when a person compartmentalizes, and tries to set aside their grief and loss in the workplace. Eventually, strong feelings catch up to us and sneak up on us, without warning. Prolonged estrangement often involve conflicts which produce chronic stress. Dealing with estrangement is a worthwhile endeavor as chronic stress contributes significantly to absenteeism, illness and other problems that can cost employers not only financially but through morale impacts as well. Much research has been done to measure the cost of absenteeism on employers. For example, the most recent 2024 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report estimated absenteeism costs employers in the United States billions annually. The cost of productivity losses are estimated at over $225.8 billion per year. Eventually, strong feelings catch up to anyone and sneak up even the most accomplished person, without warning. This class provides strategies and tools to equip anyone seeking to find fulfillment and meaning from work, even when enduring the pain of estrangement.
Employee development
I believe coaching is an approach to leading ourselves and others towards interpersonal
excellence, job satisfaction, competitive superiority and developing loyal/raving
fans/clients/customers.
Unless your business achieves competitive superiority, it’s possible your business isn’t
going to survive. When a business employs knowledgeable, professional people who
understand the importance of interpersonal effectiveness, the business is more likely to
thrive within the pains and strains of turbulent political and economic realities and
impacts. Working with a coaching mindset (and skill set) distinguishes people,
processes and business practices. I hope you agree.
Coaching, of course, is also a fulfilling profession. As a master certified coach, I spent
thousands of hours with managers, leaders and front-line employees, sharing about
what it means to demonstrate ‘coaching’ in our work life. I trademarked my coaching
style practices as The Coach Approach™. Whether nationally at organizations like
Microsoft and Abbott Laboratories, or locally at IBM or National Life Group in Vermont, I
have watched coaching become a more accepted and respected skill set. I have helped
almost 100 companies over 25+ years.
My role was to support each individual’s capacity to communicate effectively, lead with
integrity, manage priorities as a leader and live more comfortably with ambiguity and
uncertainty as change became the only constant in the workplace. I supported
individuals as they learned The success factors of teams® and encouraged lifelong
learning. Demonstrating emotional, social and cultural intelligence as a person is a
personal commitment, so all my coaching engagements involved these and other
topics.
As an Executive Coach, as you can imagine, people were often ‘sent’ to me to learn
how to communicate better or lead with greater attention to demonstrating a more
effective leadership style. Do you know your leadership style? Do you know what
distinguishes leading from managing and how each overlaps in key areas? What are
the five components of emotional intelligence and how does a person internalize these
ideas to apply them to daily tasks, with their team and customers?
If you are receptive to professional and personal development, rather than resistant,
then you may be ready to learn how to apply the principles of The Coach Approach™ in
your role at work. Leading with a coaching style will always make a lasting, positive
difference. If you want to devote time to learn more and are ready, contact Dr. Mann
