Smile Again!

SMILE AGAIN – it can happen! represents this past decade of my life. This decade involved navigating family challenges, repair, getting back on ‘the roller coaster,’ feeling discarded and trying to repair again, as I faced the many diverse and complex realities of estrangement.

This workbook includes most of my observations and lessons, recorded in my journal, turned into strategies and tools anyone can apply. I include basic and profound take-aways, revealed through reflection.

I offer some of the insights that the people I work with, as a life coach, tell me supported their desire to heal as they looked into their future and didn’t want to be sad anymore. Each told me they knew it was time to be strong enough to restore the relationships that matter most to them; including the relationship with themself. How inspiring! I agree.

There is nothing angry here – no venom, no profanity and only best wishes, with a significant dose of reality, logic, reason, purpose, analogies and a few surprises.

Thank you for joining me in this part of my journey we call life. Email contact@drddmann.com to book your 45-minute gratis coaching video call. I am happy to adapt to time zones and different days times.

Talk soon and take care loved ones.

Our Self-discovery Services

Unfortunately, I have the lived experience to relate and support you through the phases of estrangement.

One-on-one coaching

Coaching is not counseling or therapy. Therapy can be a helpful experience so please seek therapy instead of my coaching services if you need to discuss feeling depressed or despondent. However, if you would like a sounding board who offers communication strategies and tools to explore self-discovery, I am here to try to understand and support you in your estrangement journey.

Employee Assistance Coaching

Are you having difficulty focusing at work? Does your estrangement pain create a sense you are split in two? The "employee" side of your life is successful and accomplished (your work SELF) and the "parent" side of your life feels like a failure? If your estrangement has shaken you to your core, it will send shockwaves that reverberate beyond your home, especially with your role at work.

Empathy

The discipline of empathy is just that; discipline of the heart, mind and actions to foster authentic connections. Estrangement breaks down connection. Learning how to accept the choices of a loved one who intentionally has cut you off requires intense commitment to empathy and other essential markers of emotional maturity.

Smile Again Course

Smile Again presents a comforting opportunity to SHIFT our mindset from Sorrow to Strength; Helplessness to Hope; Isolation to Identity; Fear to Faith and Turmoil to Trust.

Together we will explore strategies, tools and ideas to begin to overcome the stigma, grief, ambiguous loss and the many strong emotional dynamics associated with the shock and pain of estrangement.

The Power of Empathy

Empathy is a powerful force which can transform the many aspects of estrangement to move towards engagement. Empathy is essential to reconnect, build trust, reconcile and restore important family relationships. My strategies offer effective interpersonal solutions to move through grief to build resilience and get back to contentment.

Working with you has been just the experience Ultramar needed to kick off our in-house learning programs. Our first session had to be a huge success! With comments like "fabulous," and "already putting ideas to use," a huge success it was! You not only engaged each person in the room, but you made us think! You laid the groundwork with preliminary 'listening tours' which laid the groundwork for immediate participation. Your energy and sense-of-humor kept everyone's attention, even into the late afternoon. With appreciation for excellent service,

Coach Education

Coach education is designed and delivered to build competence and maintain ethical standards in the coaching profession. Coach education involves professional training, certification and other forms of high-quality professional development.

The Coach Approach Training Academy complies with the ICF professional certification requirements and is applying for accreditation with the International Coaching Federation, at Level One, to support individuals seeking to become an Associate Certified Coach (ACC). The ICF eligibility requirements can be found here. The CAT Academy is ready to offer 60 hours of the required coaching education to prepare for your next steps, beginning with this course: The Core Fundamentals of Coaching, which offers mentoring practicum, totaling 78 hours.

The Core Fundamentals of Coaching

This course is foundational to understanding what distinguishes coaching skills from other essential interpersonal abilities.

The Core Fundamentals is also available for managers, leaders and aspiring leaders who want to fully understand how to coach their employees, applying best practices. If you don’t want to pursue coaching as a profession yet want and need to learn The Coach Approach to communication and interpersonal effectiveness, this program is also for you.

For those seeking or exploring coaching as a profession, the main distinctions The Coach Approach Training Academy are the three (possibly four) distinct tracks:

Estrangement coaching (track one) the Therapy Transition (track two) or Launching a coaching business (track three).
All classes are led by highly qualified faculty and mentors and provide rigorous curriculum.

A fourth track is ready to go (based on interest) in Executive Coaching. This track can also occur 1:1 for more intensive coaching conversations, like an independent study.
There was a time my grief and anger was so consuming, I secretly wondered what I now admit was a terribly selfish question: Would it be better for me if my daughter had died so I wouldn’t have the agony of feeling discarded and abandoned? After many months of asking myself more reasonable questions, I have finally come to many life-changing realizations. I’m hoping this self-awareness will help me reconnect with those who have moved on from the Mom I was. If they will give me a chance, I want to see where the future might take us. Thank you, DeeDee.
Widow, Mother of two
The Smile Again program helped me find a new path towards self-assurance so I could let go of the doubt that held me back from believing in myself. I realize I allowed my family to define me. Now, I will choose my destiny. Thank you, Dr. Mann!
Twenty-year old college student
My main challenge was where to start. I had so many strong feelings about how I have been mistreated by my family. I confided to my siblings that our son moved out of state without telling us. Instead of being understanding and supportive, I was criticized and judged with harsh words. I felt betrayed and shocked by their disloyalty. D. D.’s step-by-step approach, walked me through how I can come to terms with our differences. I can never accept how disrespectful everyone has been to me but I can move on from the anger and bitterness that are ruining my life. We used to be a very close family, so I have to learn to nurture new relationships and start again with people who won’t condemn me outright. I have finally discovered the power of self-respect.
Fifty-five year old retired school teacher
It was heart-breaking to watch our twenty-something grandson walk away from his family. I was caught in the middle. I probably had divided loyalties. I now see that I wasn’t neutral because I had always favored my precious grandkids. The Smile Again roadmap helped me recognize how not challenging my grandson was causing him to think I supported his choices to go ‘no contact’ with his parents. I now realize I was afraid I would lose him also; if I asked him questions that probably no one else could ask him. I feel ready to share what’s on my heart and mind. I learned a lot from Dr. Mann’s programs. I highly recommend her as a Coach and facilitator.
Eighty-six year-old Grandmother of eight, retired nurse
The interaction within group coaching helped me develop relationships with other people suffering through familial estrangement. I feel part of a community who will stay connected long after our group coaching has ended. Many thanks to D. D. for putting together such a great experience.
Forty-seven year-old craftsman and Dad
Dr. D. D. Mann is an exceptional coach who has a diversified understanding of family systems, culture and personality traits. She is insightful and highly attuned to moral values and what impacts self-awareness. Her techniques are simple yet effective. Dee Dee is very personable and asks thought-provoking and intriguing questions. She helped me to address my thinking processes and grow around my grief. Words cannot fully express her capabilities in this field.
Fifty-nine year old Father and global leader
Dee Dee has been great at giving simple, real-life tips to help me think differently about how to process the sad reality of no longer being on friendly terms with my siblings. Her easy style helps me to pause and take a deep breath when talking about my frustrating and disappointing family problems. Hopefully, what I learn through this tough time will help prevent any other estrangement in my family.
Sixty-five year-old Sister, Mom and Grandma

Transition

Psychotherapy (also called talk therapy) is a noble professional where individuals may recommend choices and present information to remediate mental health issues, over a long period of time. Therapy often explores family-of-origin issues in-depth, including root causes of behavior, including self-destructive behavior. Psychiatry follows a medical model to create inner strength to overcome addictions and other self-destructive behaviors. Counseling is often shorter-term, focusing on specific, current challenges or situations. Consulting offers expertise in certain disciplines. Consultants are considered trusted advisors who freely offer advice and solve problems through specialized services. Come and learn how coaching is distinguished from therapy, psychiatry, counseling, consulting and coaxing, while experiencing each (during mentoring) as a distinct set of skills so you are clear about coaching to never mistake one for the other, as a practicing coach.

Estrangement

Estrangement is currently an epidemic in several countries. The recent research of Dr. Joshua Coleman estimates approximately one-in-four families are facing some kind of familial discord, parental alienation and other painful forms of estrangement. Decades ago, Dr. Pauline Boss researched ambiguous loss, which is a hallmark of the many unresolved elements of estrangement, similar to the emotional torture of times of war, abduction or similar forms of disappearances (when someone is missing from your life and you do not know if a person is dead or alive). If someone is fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with the emotions associated with estrangement, they can underestimate the toll this agonizing experience can take on people, at the receiving end of someone they love going “no contact,” (with or without an explanation). Dr. Dee Dee Mann has endured over a decade of several forms of estrangement and has written several original coaching methods that will be taught in this track.

The Core Fundamentals of Coaching
